During excursions to Paris and elsewhere in France, Terkel made field recordings during lively visits to leading intellectual and cultural figures such as writer and feminist Simone de Beauvoir, filmmaker Jacques Tati, playwright Eugene Ionesco and many others, as well as a trip to a French prison, a conversation with a female impersonator and a late night visit with Chicago blues musicians Willie Dixon and Memphis Slim who were living and performing in Paris. In addition, the archive features many discussions about the wider role of France in world culture.
