Studs Terkel was deeply interested in how music, literature, painting, film, theater, poetry, dance, architecture and other arts were not just sources of idyll pleasure or things for the privileged few to commission and collect, but instead a constantly evolving manifestation of living social struggles. This interplay between art and social movements is evident in the vast majority of the interviews.
