Long before “world music” was even a recognized category Studs Terkel had an immense appetite for music from all continents and he devoted programs talking with folk musicians from places such as India, South America, Eastern Europe, Africa, the Mediterranean, Japan, Australia and elsewhere. His show featured mind-opening conversations with now legendary artists such as Inti-Illimani, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Carlos Montoya, Ravi Shankar, Xochimoki and he spoke frequently with the legendary globe-trotting popularizer of ethnomusicology Alan Lomax and other advocates of expanding awareness of world music.
