Studs Terkel speaks with writer and economist Derek Shearer about the book “Economic Democracy: The Challenge of the 1980s,” which Shearer co-authored with Martin Carnoy. Terkel and Shearer also discuss workers’ rights and equality in economics. Shearer reads a few excerpts from his book as well as a quote from labor leader Sidney Hillman.

Editor and writer Abe Peck discusses and reads from his book “Uncovering the Sixties: The Life and Times of the Underground Press.” Peck discusses the social and political forces, such as the lack of questioning authority forces seen during this time, that drove the alternative press to formation. This program includes audio clips of Studs interviewing attendees of a Vietnam War protest in Chicago. Studs also includes a clip of British journalist James Cameron discussing the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention. Studs plays "The Times They Are A-Changin'" - Bob Dylan (1964).

Back in his day, there was no journalism school, explained Russell Baker. He spent time with the police and that's how he often got his stories about the underclass or the superfluous. Baker pointed out when a paper didn't want to print one of his stories, Baker was told the subject matter was in poor taste.
