Terkel wrote in the introduction to his 2003 book Hope Dies Last, “Hope has never trickled down. It has always sprung up,” and the programs from his radio archive that focus on the struggles for peace demonstrate this idea with raw immediacy. In the conversations with peace activists, the “feeling tone” or the power of the human voice to convey what it felt like to live through experiences, comes through with great strength, whether the activism is around the Vietnam War, the peaceful pursuit of Civil Rights, resistance to nuclear weapons or the everyday violence on the streets of Chicago or other cities.
