In addition to blues, classical, folk, jazz, rock, world music and other familiar categories of music, Terkel reached across borders to talk about music in broad and genre-defying ways. As a self-proclaimed eclectic disc-jockey, Terkel also created unique radio collage programs such as his inventive and playful series from 1959, "This is Our Story" in which, over more than 40 episodes, he wove together creative playlists with his own original, artfully read scripts about various facets of American culture as reflected in music such as songs about cities, trains, rivers, outlaws, work and dozens of other topics.
