This book is told from the perspective of four granddaughters of an Ohio farm wife during the 1950s and is broken into three parts that follow these women throughout their life recounting family stories and the struggles of rural life in modern America. Barbara Kingsolver reads from and discusses her book, "Animal Dreams: A Novel." The main character, Codi, has returned to Grace, Arizona, to help her father, Doc Homer, with his bout of Alzheimer's. Kingsolver explained that the novel not only has flashbacks but that it's really about people's memories.
