Living in Chicago, a city that underwent a tremendous transformation over the second half of the 20th century to become a major center of Latin American culture, Terkel engaged with many of the leading figures of Latino artistic and social movements. Cesar Chavez, Dolores Huerta and Julian Samora discussed labor and economic struggles, writers and artists from the worlds of music, film and theater such as Sandra Cisneros, Jose Feliciano, Carlos Fuentes, Oscar Hijuelos, Carlos Montoya, Rita Moreno and Luis Valdez explored their art and residents of Latino neighborhoods discussed issues of daily life, something captured with special poignancy in Studs’ program Fiesta from 1969 which chronicles the attempt of the Puerto Rican Young Lords to organize a street festival in the Chicago neighborhood of Lincoln Park.
