Listen to New Voices on Studs Terkel our partnership with 826CHI-here! Read the Story

Terkel had an abiding curiosity to hear the ideas of younger generations, not only about their own lives and tastes but also about the biggest social and philosophical issues. In 1965 he recorded a series of five programs featuring conversations with teenagers in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood called Joy Street – a great introduction to his interest in youth perspectives. This section also features discussions with prominent artists or scholars who created work for or about children such as Ella Jenkins, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Benjamin Spock and Maurice Sendak.
